How to install Microsoft Office
For Office Professional Plus, Standard, Home & Student and Visio licences bought from DelTrix Technology. It usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Before you start
- Your PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11. These Office licences do not work on a Mac.
- You have your licence email open. It contains your 25-character product key and the download link for your version.
- Remove any other version of Office first, including the Microsoft 365 trial that often comes with new laptops. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365, and choose Uninstall. Restart your PC afterwards.
- Save your work and close all programs.
Install Office Professional Plus, Standard or Visio
Download the installer
Open the download link in your licence email. Use that link, not the Microsoft 365 page on office.com, because your key only works with the matching installer. Choose the 64-bit version unless you have been told you need 32-bit.
Run the setup file
Open the downloaded file from your Downloads folder and click Yes if Windows asks for permission. Setup downloads and installs Office. Leave the PC on and connected until it says it is done.
The setup screen may show a different Office version name while it installs. That is normal. Your key sets the correct version.
Open Word and enter your key
Open Word. When it asks for a product key, type the 25-character key from your email. If it does not ask, click File > Account > Change Product Key and enter it there.
Activate
Follow the prompts to activate over the internet. If the activation window offers activation by phone, choose that option and follow the automated steps.
Check that it worked
In Word, click File > Account. Under Product Information you should see Product Activated. You are done.
Office Home & Student
Follow the method in your email
Some Home & Student licences are installed the same way as above. Others are redeemed online at setup.office.com, where you sign in with a Microsoft account and Office is linked to that account. Your licence email tells you which method applies.
If you redeem online
Go to setup.office.com, sign in or create a Microsoft account, enter your key, then click Install. Keep the Microsoft account details safe, because you need them to reinstall Office later.
If something goes wrong
My key is not accepted ("This key can't be used here")
This usually means the installer does not match your key. Uninstall what you installed, download again using the link in your licence email, and enter the key again. Check for typing mistakes between letters and numbers, such as 8 and B.
Activation fails or keeps asking for a key
Check that you are connected to the internet and that your PC's date and time are correct. Make sure no other version of Office or Microsoft 365 is still installed, then restart and try again. If it still fails, email us a screenshot.
I already have Microsoft 365 or another Office on this PC
Uninstall it first through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then restart. Different Office versions on the same PC often stop each other from activating.
I also bought Visio or Project
Install Office first, then use the separate download link in your Visio or Project email. Some Office Professional Plus editions cannot run next to certain Visio or Project versions, so ask us before you buy both.
Can I move Office to a new PC?
Each licence is for one PC. If you replace your PC, uninstall Office from the old one first. Moving a licence is not always possible, so email us before you try.
